As legacy newspapers face cutbacks, online news organizations have stepped in to fill the gap. But they can’t do it alone. So in December 2013, Knight’s Board of Trustees approved a $5 million, 2-year grant to support them.
The result: most have increased and diversified revenue, created new models for engagement and distribution and increased web traffic by an average of 75 percent.
Knight journalism intern Paige Levin interviewed the leaders of local online news sites of the initiative to highlight best practices, lessons learned and opportunities ahead.
